AboutMalaysia

Malaysia has 13 states, 11 on the Peninsular Malaysia (West Malaysia) and 2, Sabah and Sarawak, on the island of Borneo (East Malaysia). The capital city is Kuala Lumpur. Putrajaya is the new administrative centre, which is approximately 30 minutes away from the capital. The Malaysian unit of currency is the Ringgit malaysia (RM).

Malaysia has an equatorial climate with general temperatures ranging from 21°C to 32°C. The climate is very strongly influenced by the Northeast and the Southwest Monsoon. The mean annual rainfall is approximately 267 cm.

The Malays and the indigenous groups make up approximately 60% of the total population while the Chinese and the Indians make up 30% and 8% respectively. The balance is a melting pot of other races and cultures. The official religion is Islam. However, one can practice one’s religion freely. Bahasa Malaysia is the official language but English is widely spoken. Mandarin, Tamil and Punjabi, besides other languages, are also spoken in Malaysia.

Islam is the official religion but all other religions are freely practiced.
Government
Malaysia is governed by a Parliamentary democracy with a bicameral legislative system. The Head of State is the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong, a position that is awarded to a different State Monarch every five years and the Head of Government is the Prime Minister.
Climate
Tropical climate with warm weather all year round. Temperatures in the lowlands range from 21ºC (70ºF) to 32ºC (90ºF). The highlands are cooler, where temperatures range between 15°C (59° F) to 25°C (77°F). Annual rainfall varies from 2,000mm to 2,500mm.

Economic Profile
Manufacturing constitutes the largest single component of Malaysia's economy. Tourism and primary commodities such as petroleum, palm oil, natural rubber and timber are other major contributors to the economy.
Currency
The unit of currency is Malaysian Ringgit indicated as RM. USD1 is roughly equivalent to RM3.20. Foreign currency can be converted at banks and money changers.

In Kelantan and Terengganu post offices operate during the same hours but are closed on Fridays and public holidays.

Eight hours ahead of GMT and 16 hours ahead of U.S. Pacific Standard Time.
Telephones
Local calls can be made from public phones using coins or pre-paid cards. International calls can be made from public phones with card phone facilities or at any Telekom office.
Accommodation
Malaysia has a wide range of accommodation at competitive rates. Six-star, medium range, budget hotels, youth hostels, beach chalets and timeshare apartments are just some of the types of accommodation available. Privately operated motor-homes are also available for rent.

About Melaka

Melaka, a quiet seaside city has impressed visitors as the place where the history of Malaysia began. Founded around 15th Century, Melaka is rich in history and many relics of the past. Dubbed as The Historical State, Melaka is the third smallest Malaysian state, after Perlis and Penang. It is located in the southern region of the Malay Peninsula, on the Straits of Melaka. It borders Negeri Sembilan to the north and the state of Johor to the south. The state’s capital is Melaka Town. Located about 150 kilometres to the south of Kuala Lumpur and 245 km north of Singapore, Melaka seems to be strategically linked between two national capitals (Malaysia and Singapore respectively).

Tourism is the most important sector in the state economy. Melaka has adopted as its slogan, “Visiting Melaka Means Visiting Malaysia” (“Melawat Melaka Bererti Melawat Malaysia”). It is rich in cultural heritage and bears several places of historical interest.

Apart from tourism, Melaka is also a manufacturing centre for products ranging from food and consumer products, through high-tech electronics and automotive components.There are at least 23 industrial estates that houses some 500 factories from the United States, Germany, Japan, Taiwan and Singapore.

The Portuguese and Chinese influences are visible in the city’s structure and society such as the microculture of the Baba-Nyonya in Melaka.

The programme includes the distribution of pre-departure kit, airport pick-up, briefing on matters pertaining to security, finance, lifestyle, accommodation, immigration, on-campus transportation, as well as trips around the campus and other essential needs.

Immigration & Application

VISA WITH REFERENCE (VDR) APPLICATION
With effect from 1st January 2014, all the potential international students who wish to enter Malaysia to study are required to obtain the Visa with Reference (VDR) before their entry. Please submit the following documents for the VDR application. These documents will be send to the Immigration Department of Malaysia for the approval:
  1. Copy / scan passport (all pages including the blank ones)
  2. Copy / scan UTeM offer letter
  3. Copy / scan passport size photograph
  4. Copy / scan of Test Report Form (International English Language Testing System IELTS)
  5. Copy / scan signed of the Student Acceptance Form (it is attached to the offer letter)
  6. Name of the Embassy of Malaysia / Malaysia Consulate Office near the student
VDR PROCEDURE
  • The VDR process will take minimum of two (2) weeks to be approved at the Immigration Department of Malaysia
  • The International Office (IO) of UTeM will email you the VDR upon approval from the Immigration Department of Malaysia, which you may proceed to the nearest Embassy of Malaysia / Malaysia Consulate Office to stamp the visa in your passport
  • Do not purchase your flight ticket until you have obtain the VDR approval
  • The Immigration Law of Malaysia do not allow potential international students entering Malaysia on a social / visit pass in order to apply for a student pass

INFORMATION FOR THE INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
IMMIGRATION RULES AND PROCEDURES OF MALAYSIA
  1. All the international students are advised to apply for the Visa with Reference (VDR) through the International Office (IO) of UTeM, which you may proceed to the nearest Embassy of Malaysia / Malaysia Consulate Office in order to obtain the Single Entry Visa to Malaysia
  2. To avoid from overstay and be charged for the maximum compound by the Immigration Department of Malaysia, the student is strongly advised to enter Malaysia at least three (3) days before the registration date. This is to allow the seven (7) working days for IO UTeM to prepare the documentation for the student pass application, issuance of the insurance policy and personal bond stamping; while the student pass issuance at the Immigration Department of Malaysia will take minimum of two (2) weeks. Kindly note that the student is required to do the medical check-up in Malaysia.
  3. Compound for overstaying is counted at RM300.00/day or RM1,100.00/month or any other penalty imposed by the Immigration Department of Malaysia
  4. Married students are advised to enter Malaysia as single prior to the issuance of the student pass. Dependent pass could only be applied and obtained after the student pass is approved and issued.
  5. On approval of the student pass, the student could apply for VDR in order to obtain the visa (dependent pass) for his/her family members to enter Malaysia.

IO will submit the application to the Immigration Department of Malaysia. The process will take minimum of two (2) weeks to be approved

   
5. Issuance of VDR Letter

VDR Letter is ready and issued by the Immigration Department of Malaysia

   
6. VDR Letter to be send to the student

IO collected the VDR Letter from the Immigration Department of Malaysia and sends the letter to the student via email

   
7. Student to present VDR Letter to the Embassy of Malaysia / Malaysia Consulate Office

Student MUST present the VDR Letter to the Embassy of Malaysia / Malaysia Consulate Office in order to obtain the Single Entry Visa VDR stamp. Without this stamp, student pass could not be issued

   
8. The issuance of visa to the student

Visa is issued by to the Embassy of Malaysia / Malaysia Consulate Office. This visa will only valid for three (3) months from the date of the issuance. If the student does not enter Malaysia within the three (3) months time, the student is required to re-apply.

   
9. End Process

Student is ready to enter Malaysia. Please notify the IO staff and email a copy of the flight itinerary for a pick-up airport service

1.         Make sure you have all these documents in softcopies (digital documents) ready.

    • Passport sized photograph – In JPG format, not more than 2MB.
    • Passport – In PDF format, every page including cover and blank pages. Must be in one filename only.
    • Academic Certificates (original copy and English version) – In PDF format, not more than 2MB. If the certificates are more than one, scan all in one filename.
    • IELTS or TOEFL certificate– In PDF format, if available.

D. Application Deadline
Applicants may submit their application to Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) at any time of the year. However, applications received by UTeM ON OR BEFORE 15 JULY will be considered for the current academic year intake and applications received after the above stated deadline will be considered for the next academic year intake.
