Research & Development

Active Image

Research and development are among the main focus of activities in FKM. In line with the research thrust areas of the faculty which area Automotive Engineering and Energy, major works currently focuses on the fundamental and applied research in those areas, as well as other core mechanical engineering fields such as thermal and fluid dynamics, vibration and control, material and structural engineering as well as  design and innovation engineering, involving active participation of staffs from diverse level of experiences and qualifications, i.e. academicians, teaching engineers and technical support staffs. The research activities in FKM are also been driven by active involvement from students as well as smart partnership with the industrial players. Up to date, FKM researches have engaged in numeral research supported by various government funded research grants, such as UTeM Short Term Grants, Fundamental Research Grant Scheme (FRGS), and ScienceFund etc. The success of research activities in FKM can be seen through results of various publications, awards and patents which are well recognized at national and international level.

THRUST AREAS AND CLUSTERS OF RESEARCH AT FKM

Research thrust Areas that have been assigned to FKM are:-

1.     RENEWABLE ENERGY and

2.     GREEN AUTOMOTIVE

The above 2 thrust areas are decided to be FKM main focus of research. That means all research although in the beginning are different fields should eventually converge towards achieving the goals related to the above two main thrust areas. The above two main thrust areas are further divided into several research clusters as follows:-

a.    Energy and Technology
The research activities in this cluster shall be related to the energy generation and renewable energy and its technology and other fields related to the following categories:-

 i.      Alternative Energy
ii.      Building Efficiency
iii.     Pneumatic and Hydraulic
iv.     Computational Fluid Dynamics

b.    Mechanical System and Innovative Design
The research activities in this cluster shall be related to the Design and development of Mechanical System and Creative and Innovative design and development of product. These area of studies are further sub-divided into the following sub-cluster.

i.       Machine and Power Technology
ii.      Product Development & Prototyping
iii.     CAD/CAE/CAM

c.     Automotive
The research activities for this cluster shall be related to the anything related to the main and important components of the automotive which are further categorized into the following main sub-cluster.

i.       Vehicle Dynamics
ii.      Vehicle Power Train
iii.     Vehicle Chassis Design
iv.     Internal Combustion Engine

d.    High Performance Materials and Structures
The research activities in this cluster shall be related to all materials and structures for the design and development of  new and improved automotive or energy generation components which shall be further grouped into the following sub-clusters:-

i.       Crashworthiness
ii.      Advanced Materials
iii.     Structural Integrity
iv.     Acoustic and Noise Control
