Department of Control, Instrumentation & Automation

The control, instrumentation and automation engineering is a combination of three areas; control engineering, instrumentation engineering and automation engineering. This combination results in a complex system, which comprises analysis and control design system, robotics, introductory to FMS system and automation. Graduates of this course will be conversant in electrical engineering, have strong technical competency in the field of control, instrumentation and automation, have specialist skills in design, development and management of advanced control and automation systems, and have the ability to participate in and lead complex multidisciplinary projects.

In the Faculty of Electrical Engineering in UTeM, the Department of Control, Instrumentation and Automation (CIA) started its operation in year 2003. The department lead by a Head of Department with consists of professors, lecturers, tutors as well as teaching engineers, and with the help from technical staff; technical assistant and technicians.

Students whose performance over the four years of the course is of a high standard may be awarded the Bachelor of Electrical Engineering (Control, Instrumentation and Automation) with Honours degree.
This course has been granted Accreditation by Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC) in 2007.
The Faculty offers a wide range of laboratories, fully equipped with the latest teaching and learning equipment with the ratio of two (2) to three (3) students per station. This arrangement will suit the teaching and learning concepts based on problem centered, action learning and practical application as stipulated in the Practice and Application Oriented approach.

It facilitate with various control software such as MATLAB, Multisim and Micro-box.


The department is aiming to become a center for promoting excellence in education and research in the areas of control, instrumentation and automation engineering. Therefore, recently, we have established research cluster in Robotics and Industrial Automation with Mechatronics Department. The cluster will be focused on research in robotics, vision systems, sensors, Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS) and other industrial automation related.

On the other hand, there are several research that have been done: Design of Multi-Detect Surface Algorithm, PC Based Software Development, PLC-Based Control and Automation Control, Control System Course by Hands On Approach, Smart Sensor for Intelligence Control System, Virtual Instrumentation for an Automated System, Intelligent Automated Car Park System, Design and Development of a Compact Flying Robot using Intelligent Controller, Design and Development of an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle, Real Time PID and Fuzzy Logic Position Controlled DC Motor Drives for Robotic Application, Embedded Controller for Robotics and Industrial Automation Applications.

The requirement for engineers with practice and application oriented in the field of Control, Instrumentation and Automation engineering is required in the proficient level. The graduates are demanded because of them are strongly emphasizes with technical knowledge and practical work skills.Control, Instrumentation and Automation engineers have diverse employment opportunities in most sectors of industry, including:
